Animal Spirits represents a first for me.

It's the first of my albums to be recorded entirely in the company of another person. Producer James Brown and I had been working together for years, bit mostly from different sides of the Atlantic. When he moved out of New York City into a place in the countryside and built himself a studio in a big red barn, he suggested we try out his new setup by recording my next album there together.

Usually I will write songs and then set about recording what will become the definitive version. I very rarely make demos figuring I might as well get on with doing the real thing. But since this was to be a different kind of project, I wanted to make recordings so that James could hear the songs in their naked form, leaving all production choices still open.

So I decided not to use any studio gear and just play the songs in their simplest form, live in my living room, on a single instrument and record them on a little digital field recorder.

These recordings were never intended for release and should absolutely not be considered "alternate versions".
These are sketches.
A curiosity piece for those interested in the process of turning the raw materials of song into the finished article of an album.
